Everyone reacts to pain differently. Many older people have been told not to talk about their aches and pains. Some people feel they should be brave and not complain when they hurt. Other people are quick to report pain and ask for help. It helps a great deal to understand how you relate to your pain.
- Want all pain to be abolished.
- Want some pain to remain as a reminder. As one cancer patient put it, “If I didn’t feel some pain, how would I know what that cancer is doing in there.”
- See the pain as something to be conquered.
- See it as something to be accepted.
Once you understand how you relate to your pain you will be more able understand how to deal with it.
